Proclaim His Love

THE DAY OF THE LORD

Mar 1, 2026

In our passage today from 1 Thessalonians 5:1–11, the Apostle Paul pivots away from the method of the resurrection to the reality of the "Day of the Lord." His message is one of contrasts: light versus darkness, sobriety versus drunkenness, and sudden destruction versus intentional preparation.

Paul begins by acknowledging that his readers already know the timing of Christ’s return is unpredictable, famously describing it like a "thief in the night." This isn't meant to cause worries for the believer, but rather to highlight the deception of the world.

The core of the passage is an identity check. Paul insists that there are only two different groups in the world, the "sons of the light" and "those of darkness" Because they belong to the light, they should not be caught off guard when the Lord returns.

He instructs them to maintain a state of spiritual "soberness," To illustrate this readiness, he utilizes military imagery, instructing the faithful to put on the breastplate of faith and love and the helmet of the hope of salvation.

Paul reminds the Thessalonians that they are not destined for wrath, but for "obtaining salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ." Whether we are awake or asleep (living or dead) at His coming, the end result is life together with Him.

He concludes with a practical command: because this future is certain, believers must encourage one another and build each other up.
