Proclaim His Love

Sunday Morning Service

Nov 17, 2024

FBC Family, On November 28th we will celebrate Thanksgiving. It is one day each year which we set aside time to truly give thanks to God.

Thanksgiving is a time to reflect on the blessings in our lives and express gratitude to our God. It's an opportunity to acknowledge the people and experiences that bring joy and meaning.

Maybe you have noticed that our culture has moved the term from Thanksgiving day to Turkey day, and we see the focus being shifted from giving thanks to being about the bird. Much like Christmas has become about Santa and the grinch, rather than the birth of Christ, and easter about a bunny.

Thanksgiving has also become a bit overshadowed by the Black Friday sales, I read a prayer this week that said "Thank you for all my blessings, Lord, from the bottom of my heart. But now I'm off to Amazon.com to fill my shopping cart."

And a quote about the mayhem of black Friday shopping at the mall- Nothing says ‘I love you” like a Christmas present someone had to throw an elbow to get for you.”

But what is thanksgiving to you? Is it about friends and family that come over to feast with you? Is it about the turkey, which is often the centerpiece of the table, about getting ready for Black Friday, or about getting settled in to watch the annual Thanksgiving day football games?

Or is it about truly giving thanks? I am not being critical, I enjoy all of these traditions myself, yet we certainly need to take time to stop on this special day and give Thanks to God.

Not just on the 4th Thursday in November, but every day. The scriptures teach us this very thing- the scriptures even command us to be thankful, every day, if we do so, we will find a new peace and even joy- if we can learn to be a thankful people.

Eph. 5:19,20 instructs Christians to  19 speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord, 20 giving thanks always for all things to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.     pastor tim
