What God has Given Us

As we continue to focus our music in June on “Heaven”, today the choir will present a tribute to Rick Sturdivant. Rick was a beloved deacon and leader at Hazard First Baptist, who had served in many roles at our church.

We are called to "Remember your leaders, those who spoke to you the word of God. Consider the outcome of their way of life, and imitate their faith" (Hebrews 13:7 ESV). Rick certainly lived out this call. I believe that his favorite was encouraging the senior ladies, driving the van to pick them up for church and Sunday school and also taking them on several outings.

So, today we celebrate Rick’s life, one that has been effective in serving others, in growing the kingdom, and one that has touched so many lives. Rick served the Lord and our church, always remembering the biblical truth, "Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ" (Colossians 3:23-24). He set an example that we need to follow; he was faithful in the services of our church and sought ways to serve others. May we follow his example, living lives that honor Christ, knowing that for believers, "to live is Christ, and to die is gain" (Philippians 1:21).
