Salome’s Bold Request
Mother's Day is a special time to honor the women whom God has blessed with the sacred calling of motherhood. The Bible consistently elevates the role of a mother, recognizing her influence in the lives of her children and the shaping of future generations.
Throughout scripture, we see mothers with different hopes and challenges. One such mother was Salome, the mother of James and John, two of Jesus' disciples. She demonstrates a mother's natural desire for her children's advancement.
In Matthew's Gospel, we read, "Then the mother of the sons of Zebedee came up to him with her sons, and kneeling before him she asked him for something. And he said to her, 'What do you want?' She said to him, 'Declare that these two sons of mine may sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your kingdom'" Matthew 20:20-21. This request from Salome for her sons to hold positions of power in Christ's kingdom reveals a common drive for moms, longing for the advancement of their children.
Jesus, in His infinite wisdom, does not rebuke Salome, but uses her plea as a profound teaching moment, not just for James and John, but for all His disciples.
This passage reminds us that true greatness in God's kingdom is not found in positions of power, but in humble service to Christ and others. Christian mothers, like Salome, may desire the best for their children, but our ultimate prayer should be that they embrace God's calling to serve.
