Sunday Morning Service
Ever been in a situation in which you really didn’t know what to do, or you did exactly the wrong thing or said the wrong thing. I am a world class wrong thing sayer.
We often refer to these as awkward situations or awkward Moments when we are made uncomfortable or a bit embarrassed.
What are some of the awkward moments that you have experienced in your life? --Maybe they were pretty simple- like when someone across a crowded room is waving and you wave back, thinking I don’t know that person, yet I don’t want to seem to be a snob, yet later you realize that they are waving to the person behind you. Awkward moment
Or simply trying to pull a door open that is clearly marked push- and there are 10 people behind you. Awkward moment
When you say goodbye to someone and then you wind up walking in the same direction. Awkward moment
Or going in for a hug when all the other person wanted was a hand shake- awkward moment
Reminds me of a true story that happened to a pastor friend of mine; one of the church member’s dad had passed away and he was going to console him.
As he walked into the house to greet the man who had lost his father, he went to hug him, they had that awkward moment when they didn’t know when to go left or right with their heads, guys are not good huggers especially when it comes to one guy hugging another- the fellow the pastor was going to hug had been crying, as they bobbled their heads, the fellow’s nose went right into the pastors mouth. Awkward moment.
1. Today in the book of Luke ch 7 we are going to consider a very awkward moment, not for our Lord but for the host that he was visiting, and it wasn’t awkward in the sense that you would think.
This last story of chapter 7 Verses 36 to 50 is often known as the story of the Sinful Woman. Yet I think that it could be better titled as An Awkward moment with Simon the Pharisee.
