What type of dirt are you?
I recently read about a man and his wife from Memphis travelling through Arkansas. She was a little on the ornery side and plus that- she was hard of hearing.
As she and her husband were driving from Tennessee to Little Rock, Arkansas. They were pulled over by a state trooper who asked if the husband knew how fast he was driving. The wife asked, "What did he say?” The husband replied, "HE ASKED IF I KNEW THAT I WAS SPEEDING.”
Looking at the driver’s license the trooper said, "I see you’re not from around here.” The husband said, "No we are from Memphis.” The wife again asked, "What did you say?” The husband told her, "I TOLD HIM WE ARE FROM MEMPHIS.”
The state trooper then commented, "You know, the meanest woman I ever met was from Memphis.” The wife again asked, "What did he say?” The husband replied, "HE SAYS HE THINKS HE KNOWS YOU!"
Well today I want to ask some questions about you. What type of person are you? Are you ornery- mean person, or gracious and understanding person? Just exactly how would you describe yourself – if you had to do write a description of yourself in 100 words or less what would you say? I saw a list this week of how some folks would describe themselves.
1. I'm not a complete idiot, but some parts are missing."
2. “I am so clever that sometimes I don’t understand a single word of what I am saying.” — Oscar Wilde
3. “If I had to describe myself in one word, it would be bad at following directions.” — Anonymous
4. "I have a black belt for accidentally saying the wrong thing at the wrong time." — Anonymous
5. . "I'm like a sloth on roller skates - slow, clumsy, but full of determination to make it to the finish line." — Anonymous
6. . “My favorite machine at the gym is the vending machine.” — Caroline Rhea
7. “Part-time superhero, full-time snack connoisseur. Saving the world one chip at a time." — Anonymous
Yeah, that’s just an example of how we might describe ourselves. Well today I have a little bit different question for you, as we consider our passage today found in Luke 8- today I want to ask the question What Type of Dirt Are You?
No, I am not asking what type of dirt that you might have under your fingernails, I am asking what type of dirt are you? -Today in our text- Jesus tells us in the Parable of the Sower that there are 4 different types of soil or dirt, each of us fall into one of these categories of dirt.
1. I want you to consider which group- which dirt are you? We begin with Ch 8: 4-9 4 And when a great multitude had gathered, and they had come to Him from every city, He spoke by a parable: 5 “A sower went out to sow his seed. And as he sowed, some fell by the wayside; and it was trampled down, and the birds of the air devoured it. 6 Some fell on rock; and as soon as it sprang up, it withered away because it lacked moisture. 7 And some fell among thorns, and the thorns sprang up with it and choked it.
8 But others fell on good ground, sprang up, and yielded a crop a hundredfold.” When He had said these things He cried, “He who has ears to hear, let him hear!”
9 Then His disciples asked Him, saying, “What does this parable mean?”
