I wish I hadn’t said that
This is pastor tim from Hazard First Baptist with Today’s Good News.
I recently searched social media to gather some really funny things pastors wish they hadn’t said while preaching. Most preachers have a great sense of humor, even if it’s self-deprecating humor.
I would like to share a few of these with you today.
The first was one that I committed as a new preacher some years ago. I was speaking about the Disciple Matthew, who was a Tax Collector in the New Testament, I said that Matthew was a contortionist. When I said it, I thought that something did not sound right. And the second time that I mentioned the same, that he was a contortionist, I could tell that my audience was about to burst out laughing. But I could not figure out why, after the service someone pointed it out to me, that Matthew was not a contortionist, he did not travel with the carnival and perform with the Bearded Lady, he was an extortionist.
However it is good to know that many of fellow pastors and preacher have said dumb stuff such as :
1. “God loves a cheerful liver.”
2. “We must guard against that four-letter word called pride.”
3. While preaching on John 3 where Jesus talks about the wind blowing: One pastor rather loudly and with great excitement said “You can’t break wind.” Instead of you don’t know how the wind blows.
4. One pastor at his first baby dedication service and in the midst of several crying babies said, “the history of child sacrifice goes back many centuries.” To which the mothers were a bit shocked.
5. Another embarrassingly said during his final prayer, instead of Father you know our hearts, he said : “Father, you know our farts.”
6. A young pastor preaching in a nursing home spoke a blessing over the residents saying, “God, I want you to bless each person here at this funeral home.”
7. This one is a pretty bad one also- It was supposed to be “enemies”: But the preacher said at the top of his voice “God has given you power over all your enemas.”
We may occasionally not get it right while preaching- but we all need to be under the preaching of God’s Word.
