Light or Darkness
Around Halloween kids used to play a lot of pranks, toilet paper yards, barricade roads, setting trees on fire- throwing eggs. Whenever I was a teenager I lived in Pulaski Va. We lived in an apartment building very close to a well travelled street.
Come Halloween we wanted to play a few pranks, –so I got the idea of playing pocketbook. Have any of you ever played pocketbook. We got an ole purse that belonged to my mom, without her knowledge, and we got some monofilament fishing string. Tied it to the purse and threw it next to the road. Then we would wait.
At 11 o’clock at night the local mill would be changing shifts as they would travel by – we would be hid on the porch where we had a good view of the purse that we had placed next to the road. It was great fun to watch people – stop and look around to see if anyone else was looking and then run back from their cars to get the purse, at about the same time that they would reach down to get it we would jerk the fishing string and pull it back up on the porch.
They would scream- some would speak French to us and get back in their cars and leave.
We used the element of darkness in order to trick people. If they came after us we could run and hide in the darkness. We used the darkness to have a little fun.
In today’s text we are going to learn of the Jews and Pharisee’s who walked in darkness, even though they thought that they were the folks that were the purveyors of light, they were the ones that were fooled and continued to walk in darkness.
