Family and Home
Like most of us-family and home are the most precious to us. For our families and our homes shaped our lives for our futures. How we were brought up and the things that happened to us within our families and at our homes will follow us throughout our lifetimes.
When we think of family, we often have wonderful memories and sometimes we have some memories we would prefer to forget. We think of the homes that we grew up in, they may have been simple houses, they may have been small trailers or apartments, yet we often hold them as great memories. It didn’t matter how big our house was; it mattered that there was love in it.
Home, yes even if they weren’t the greatest by the world’s standards, they become an important part of our life.
In our text today Jesus speaks with 3 different men about the cost of following him – and all three faces the challenge of giving up family and home to follow Him.
57 Now it happened as they journeyed on the road, that someone said to Him, “Lord, I will follow You wherever You go.”58 And Jesus said to him, “Foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay His head.”
59 Then He said to another, “Follow Me.” But he said, “Lord, let me first go and bury my father.” 60 Jesus said to him, “Let the dead bury their own dead, but you go and preach the kingdom of God.”
61 And another also said, “Lord, I will follow You, but let me first go and bid them farewell who are at my house.”62 But Jesus said to him, “No one, having put his hand to the plow, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.”
